I know, I know – we’re already aware that stereotypes are not a good basis for characters. Sometimes, though, we don’t even realise that we’re conforming to stereotypes.
For example, I think most of us know that ‘Blondes are ditzy’ is a stereotype (and immediately debunked when you meet some of my blonde friends, most of whom are engineering graduates). A lot of those same people wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a stereotype like ‘Millenials want everything for free’. That’s just as unfair a generalisation!
Of course, if you have a millenial character, by all means make them averse to spending money if they can pirate, steal, or otherwise obtain something for free, but examine their motives and their limits. For example, one such character might be a lazy, entitled good-for-nothing who’d steal a car from her own grandmother given half an opportunity. Another might be a well-intentioned student who can’t afford the expensive graphics programs he needs for his degree and therefore guiltily pirates it in an attempt to get by. Still another may use sites like Freecycle to get what they need or want, but wouldn’t dream of stealing.
Just my thought for the night, which is a full six minutes late for my daily posting schedule, so I do apologise for that. Let me know your thoughts in the comments if you like, and I’ll be back tomorrow (well, later today!)
